<image:caption>November 2015 This series about Toronto's Lower Don River Valley comprises over 75 photographs. This urban photographic exploration addresses the Don Valley as a complex site that includes natural habitat, the Don River and its ecosystem, issues of land use and human presence (both visible and invisible), and industrial use of the Lower Don River Valley through images of man-made structures such as the rail line, bridges, and buildings (both permanent and temporary). The series reflects the diverse and complicated nature of the Lower Don River Valley as a site of constant change. The images document various fragments of life in the Don Valley and along the river, focusing on the marginality, ephemerality, and liminality that characterize such urban borderlands throughout four seasons. A selection of images from the series was exhibited at the CRH Gallery, Evergreen Brick Works, in Toronto during the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, April 27-June 1, 2017.</image:caption>

<image:title>After Hitchcock's "I Confess": Stills from an Imaginary Remake (Québec, QC)</image:title>
<image:caption>As the only Renaissance city in North America, Québec takes its origin in the foundation of the French colony in 1608, and it embodies the long-standing presence of the French language on the continent. A singular characteristic of the city is the omnipresence of the Catholic Church as refracted in symbols such as churches, buildings, monuments, and statues. No wonder Alfred Hitchcock would choose this city as the setting for I Confess, his psychological thriller telling the story of a Catholic priest, Father Logan (Montgomery Clift), who is wrongfully accused of the murder of one of his parishioners. The churchman’s faith is put to the test when he has to keep secret the real killer’s confession while being accused of the crime. An underrated production that rarely figures among Hitchcock’s masterpieces such as Rear Window, Psycho, or Vertigo, I Confess was shot in black and white and released in 1953. A memorable aspect of the film is its cinematography, whose film noir aesthetics makes great use of domineering shadows, innovative angles, and architectural landmarks such as the Château Frontenac. The series pays homage to Hitchcock’s visual strategies by adding colour to the picture, so to speak, more than 60 years after the film was shot. Québec’s own Robert Lepage pays tribute to Hitchcock’s film in Le Confessional (1995), and “After Hithcock’s I Confess: Stills from an Imaginary Remake” offers a different take on the classic by having recourse to the still image and night photography to showcase the city’s stunning colours at night and reveal undocumented features of its rich history and architecture.</image:caption>

The ongoing series pays homage to Hitchcock’s visual strategies by adding colour to the picture, so to speak, more than 60 years after the film was shot. Québec’s own Robert Lepage pays tribute to Hitchcock’s film in Le Confessional (1995), and “After Hithcock’s I Confess” offers a different take on the classic by having recourse to the still image and night photography to showcase the city’s stunning colours at night and reveal undocumented features of its rich history and architecture.</image:caption>

Exhibition title: Chengzhongcun 城中村 Gallery 1313, Toronto, May 22-June 16, 2019 http://g1313.org/6562/chengzhongcun-may-22-june-16/ Curated by Henry Heng Lu ———————————————————————————- Containing over 60 photographs, the series was shot at night in five Chinese megacities: Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Inspired by Brassaï’s seminal Paris de nuit [Paris by Night] (1933), the project focuses on three elements in Chinese urban environments: urban villages where migrant workers live; the juxtaposition of the old and the new denoting urban China’s ongoing transformations; and the visual archiving of older parts of town. The images capture the various light sources and reflections that colour the scenes at night and show undocumented areas of town – otherwise crowded and noisy during the day – in their unsuspected nocturnal tranquility. The project has received the generous support of Ryerson University and the Faculty of Communication & Design.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Created in collaboration with Ryerson colleagues Pierre Tremblay and David Bouchard, Nunavut Lights is a multifaceted project exploring visualizations of a photographic archive. The archive – collected and analyzed by our automated system – consists of a collection of time-lapsed images captured by a weather webcam in Kimmirut, Nunavut in 2010-2012. On June 21, 2010, the longest day of the year, we started capturing from the webcam. Data was collected four times every hour, twenty-four hours a day. The archive contains over 60,000 images. Nunavut Lights is a multi-format project that includes interactive works and short films proposing various experiences of reading the database. See http://nunavutlights.com Constructed Land InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre May 25 - June 30, 2012 with Alex Geddie "Constructed Land" is an exhibition and multi-format (multi-channel video, interactive projections, sound) project which proposes various experiences of reading this amazing database. The Kimmirut scene remains a constant throughout, but it is transformed, re-imagined, and presented under a different light by each process. The artists have assembled and recombined this vast array of images as new visual compositions representing different facets of this fascinating town on the edges of our imagination. Through the multiplicity of a single image, the viewer is given a narrow perspective on this remote landscape, while at the same time exposed to a variety of ways of seeing. Evoking notions of solitude and encroachment, the fragility of "settlement" and the powerful forces of nature, the work exposes us to a region of the country few of us have ever experienced.</image:caption>

<image:title>Abstract from the Concrete (Toronto, ON) - Abstract from the Concrete</image:title>
<image:caption>In December 2017, I began a close photographic study of a singular structure known as the Eastern Ave. Bridge in Toronto. The truss bridge, spanning the Lower Don River, is now an unused, rusty structure that was de-commissioned in 1964 when the Don Valley Parkway was built and the Eastern Ave. rerouted. In use from 1933 to 1964, the bridge connected the East side to the downtown core. The concrete structure standing parallel to the Eastern Ave. Bridge is a bridge that belongs to Enbridge Gas transporting a gas pipeline over the river. The Eastern Ave. bridge’s structure remains in place to this day, an unusal attraction in the Lower Don River Valley landscape. Working on the “Borderlands” project for several years, I always marveled at how the Eastern Ave. Bridge kept reinventing itself with the help of graffiti artists. In December 2017, the bridge reached such a unique, colourful state that I thought I should capture it. That said, I didn’t want to make landscape images of it – which I had accumulated over the years of course –, but I wanted to photograph the graffiti in a way that I had never seen done before. That’s when the idea of using macro photography hit me. Closely photographing the graffiti, running paint, and the vertical spaces between the bridge structure created colourful, abstract compositions that uncannily recall painterly abstraction but with a twist: the macro shots make of the bridge an abstraction that preserves an indexical link to reality. Painterly abstraction meets photographic documentation in this series celebrating the legacy of abstract painting and the revival of abstract photography. Images of the bridge itself and objects left behind by graffiti artists complement the abstractions. In sum, there are two central concerns at the heart of this series. The first is to merge two photo genres that rarely figure in tandem: urban landscape and macro photography. The second is to revive abstract photography in a way that makes it dialogue with the documentary potential of the image to archive constantly evolving urban landscapes.</image:caption>
